Participatory Care for Your Health

Truly individualized healthcare draws equally from scientific evidence and the unique mind, body, and spirit of the patient. Naturopathic medicine is a general practice field, complementary to conventional medicine, and dedicated to the study and celebration of holistic health and healing. It is committed to empowering patients to retain control over their health and well-being.

Naturopathic physicians spend a great deal of time with their patients. Like conventional physicians, naturopathic physicians have the credentials to prescribe medication and make a full range of treatment decisions. Naturopathic physicians focus on developing a collaborative relationship with the patient, with the goal of empowering them to steer and improve their own health with greater independence from professional treatment.

Your Visit

The SCNM Medical Center and Neil Riordan Center for Regenerative Medicine are the teaching clinics for the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. As a patient,a care team is assigned to you. Your team is comprised of the attending physician, resident, and 3rd and 4th year medical students. This team partners with you to deeply understand your health/illness experience and to create  goals for your well being.

On the day of your visit, you’ll bring in your completed paperwork (or you will have submitted it to us by fax or email). The first clinicians you’ll meet are the senior medical students who’ll work with you under the direct supervision of the attending physician. You may notice they introduce themselves as “primary” student and “secondary” student. Your care team will take you back to the exam room, take your vitals and begin asking questions to best understand why you came in to be seen.

The student doctors will report in to the attending physician and resident, who will come in to see you and discuss the next steps – additional questions, physical exam, lab work, etc. You are offered information and choices along the way as your care team designs your treatment plan. You are encouraged to be an active partner in your healthcare, working toward optimal health and wellness with each return visit.

If you need to have any labs done, we have an onsite lab that is CLIA and COLA accredited. The lab staff consists of a team of experts who specialize in drawing blood, including pediatric draws.

Sometimes, you will be prescribed a supplement(s). If this is the case, you may purchase your supplement at our on-site natural medicinary. You are under no obligation to do so. The Medicinary is simply another convenience of being cared for at the SCNM.

As we’ve mentioned, learning happens at our clinics- and learning can take time. Appointments on student shifts often take two to three hours, so please plan accordingly. We appreciate your patience as you help us train the next generation of physicians.

Private Clinic Visits

While most of what we do is train the next generation of physicians, we know that some patients prefer a more typical one-on-one visit with a physician. Many of our providers offer private clinic visits. The fee schedule is more expensive and the time spent is typically less than on a student clinic visit. Everything else is the same: convenient location, friendly patient services representatives, qualified and experienced providers, on-site lab, and natural medicinary.
