Choosing the right cleanse program

There are many cleanse programs available, but not all of them are the same. Choosing the right program can make a significant difference. Here are three questions to ask when choosing the best cleanse for you.

1. Does the program encourage weight loss that will help to eliminate fat-soluble chemicals stored in adipose tissue?

If you’re already having difficulty with chemicals in your environment then the pace at which you lose weight, and release more chemicals, should be taken into consideration to avoid causing yourself harm. The standard recommendation of losing 1-2 pounds per week is ideal to sustain weight loss and prevent a more drastic dump of chemicals into the blood stream. It’s also important to note age is likely a better predictor of some fat-soluble chemicals that weight, so older adults are more likely to have a higher burden than a young adult with more adipose tissue.

2. Does the program include a strategic use of supplementation/nutrients to maximize elimination of stored chemicals?

Certain foods have been demonstrated to have an effect on our detoxification pathways, primarily those involving the cytochrome p450 system. This system, mainly functioning in the cells of the liver, is responsible for eliminating or helping to eliminate a substantial portion of the chemicals to which we are exposed. Certain foods, such as cruciferous vegetables, have demonstrated benefit by up regulating some of the enzymes necessary for this system to function. Additionally, nutrients like B12, B6, folate, and magnesium have been identified as important co-factors in the detoxification process. A good detoxification program should emphasize whole foods that have significant amounts of nutrients capable of assisting in the detox process as well as selected supplementation for additional support. Supplementation, in this case, should take a back seat to diet that is focused mostly around whole foods.

3. Does the program utilize a diet that simultaneously reduces weight and chemical exposure while also reducing foods to which you may be unknowingly sensitive?

A cleanse program should not only focus on a diet consisting of whole foods (unprocessed) but one that also minimizes exposure to additional chemicals by opting for foods that are organically grown, grass-fed and pasture raised (in the case of animal products) and limited in terms of known chemical contamination (e.g. foods containing a substantial amount of mercury like swordfish or tuna). Ideally, the protocol should also either cycle foods or eliminate foods temporarily that are commonly reported food sensitivities.
